Savoury Macarons, the Next Big Thing?


I was skeptical at first too. I love macarons, especially high-quality imported French macarons. Just last month, I did a head-to-head comparison of two of Toronto’s biggest names Ladurée VS Nadège. Read all about the epic showdown and see who came out victorious here. I considered myself well-versed in the macaron scene… But savoury macarons? Nadège had a featured Brie and Honey macaron that I previously considered to be on the savoury side. Now I know better. You learn something new at every foodie event!


Savoury Macarons Collection-RepChampion Canada

I attended a media-event showcasing gourmet savoury macarons imported from France  by RepChampion Canada. The Macarons have won Le Trophée de la Gastronomie and are selected by worldwide sports organizations to serve at prestigious events. I was excited to try something new but went in with the following questions:

  1. How savoury are we talking about?
  2. When would you crave a savoury macaron over a sweet one?
  3. How would they compare price wise to big Toronto names?

The Venue-Marylebone Cafe and Creamery

I arrived at Marylebone Cafe and Creamery where the event was being held. What a hidden gem! The space is beautiful, modern and bright. They specialize in organic and authentic flavours. For their flavoured lattes they offer unique options like black sesame, tiramisu, baklava, and turmeric to name a few.

To flavour the beverage they infuse the milk with real ingredients in place of artificial syrups.

I went with a french vanilla iced latte and it was one of the best coffees I’ve had in a long time! I didn’t even have to say “half sweet” because they don’t use fake over-powering syrups, just real ingredients infused in the milk. Amazing. Will definitely be going back, especially because they carry the RepChampion Macarons!

  • Green Olive Tapenade
  • Cep Mushroom (regarded as one of the finest mushrooms available)
  • Goat Cheese
  • Truffle
  • Roquefort
  • Fig and Onion
  • Bell-Pepper
  • Carrot and Cumin

The Answers to my Initial Questions

  1. The macarons are very savoury. True to their flavour profiles, they pack a bold punch. If you’re not a blue cheese lover (like me) there’s no way you would enjoy the Roquefort for example. It was as potent in flavour as biting into a piece of real Roquefort cheese and I savoured every bite.
  2. After trying the savoury macarons collection, I’m a firm believer that once you get over the initial shock of a macaron that looks like a dessert tasting savoury you’ll crave them just as you would any other gourmet product. They would be the perfect addition to your wine and cheese platter. Brides have had cheese wheel wedding cakes, why not a savoury macaron cake?
  3. Price wise they are more affordable than big name Toronto brands! At $2.50 a macaron for a unique, handmade, gourmet, imported product they’re definitely a steal.


How to Serve Savoury Macarons

  • On a Cheese Platter at your next Cocktail Party (Green Olive Tapenade)
  • As an Appetizer, the Carrot and Cumin is reminiscent of a delicious fall soup
  • As a Crunchy Salad Topper (Goat Cheese, Roquefort, Fig and Onion)
  • As a Soup Topper (Imagine the Cep Mushroom on top of a cream of mushroom soup or the Red Pepper on top of a butternut squash soup)
  • As an Interesting Side, the Truffle paired well with my steak dinner today
  • Alongside a Dessert or Fruit Platter (Goat Cheese)

Final Thoughts

Savoury Macarons might just be the next big thing! Be ahead of the trend and include them at your next wine and cheese party.

Surprise your guests with something they most likely have never tried before.

They would also be a great appetizer for your next big event, the perfect conversation starter. I went in a skeptic, but left a fan surely to return again soon for more delicious coffee and macarons. The savoury macarons can be ordered online or purchased in store at Marylebone Cafe.

  3. That’s unusual! I have acquired a taste for macarons. When I first tried the sweet ones, I didn’t care for them and after about seven years I tried them again only 3 weeks ago and fell in love! I will consider trying the savory version.

  4. How funny, I was just wondering exactly the same thing… Came across a green asparagus & olive oil one at Pierre Hermé, but wasn’t brave enough to try it!
