Sofia Goes to… Smoked & Cracked

I have been meaning to try Smoked and Cracked for ages. It’s in my neighbourhood, I love seafood, and it’s usually pretty busy (always a good sign).  It’s only open Wed-Sat so there have been a few times I’ve walked by intending to try it for lunch and disappointedly found it closed. But I was craving lobster, on a day it was open, so today was the day!

It’s a cozy space adorned with tea-lights and nautical decor. There are no menus.

The menu is actually written on a chalkboard on the wall that is not visible from every table. However, the server happily went through all of the options and gave fantastic descriptions of each plate.

House made croutons were brought soon after we ordered and Elowyn was a big fan of them. She also had the “side” mac-and-cheese but she was honestly much more into the bread. #foodiebaby

I had the lobster chowder to start, which had generous portions of lobster meat and a flavourful lightly creamy broth. I appreciated that it was not overly thick and that the lobster was the highlight (no big chunks of potato) in the dish.

For my main, I had the Newport Lobster Roll (hot). There was also an East Coast Lobster Roll (cold) that I probably would have picked for lunch, but for dinner I prefer my mains hot. The lobster roll did not disappoint!

Again, a very generous portion of perfectly cooked lobster.

The roll was from a local bakery, Epi Breads, and it was soft and fluffy. The lobster was lightly dressed and I can’t emphasize enough what a pleasure this roll was to eat. Definitely a must try!

My husband had the crab cakes that were served on a spicy slaw. They were lightly breaded and much less oily than your typical crab cake. The spicy slaw went well with the crab cakes and was a unique side. I can’t say I’ve ever had spicy slaw before but now it might be something I try making at home.

Our friend had the Smoke House Board and Mussels Provencal and was happy with his meal but noted that maybe next time he would order an additional side because it wasn’t very filling.

We spent 30-50 dollars each, and that was without ordering alcoholic beverages or dessert. That being said, it was a delicious meal and with its romantic ambiance, I truly enjoyed the experience and would like to return for more tasty seafood!

*Note they do not have booster seats but it was child-friendly otherwise (seemingly no one minded our loud toddler)
